Who We Are

North Country Retrievers is the product of a friendship/business relationship between Greg Monroe and Rick Steenhoven that began in Alaska in 1985 when they were both stationed there while working for the Department of Defense.  Greg was also operating a fishing charter boat for Halibut and Salmon.  When Rick chartered with Greg one weekend he asked Rick "So where are you from?"  When Rick replied that he was born and raised in South Dakota, Greg told him that he too was raised in South Dakota.  As it turns out they had hunted some of the same fields, slolughs and lakes in their youth.  From that day forward a life-long family friendship was established.  between the two of them, they have logged over 75 years of pheasant and waterfowl hunting.  Greg now operates SoDak Pheasant camp with his cousin Russ Hoelsher near Presho South Dakota.  After their clients have gone, Greg and Russ set aside the week of Thanksgiving to entertain their best friends and family members to some world class hunting on their property.  While Greg is in SoDak from the first week of October thru the beginning of December every year, Rick can be found there for the two weeks surrounding Thanksgiving doing what thye enjoy and working their world class retrievers.  Rick has provided professional guide service to a number of outfitters throughout Easter an dCentral South Dakota for several years, including SoDak pheasant camp, but his job with the Department of Defesne keeps him from doing it as much as he would like.  Greg has since retired and hunts and fishes full time.  He is the envy of every one of our friends, but he has worked hard to get where he is and is deserving of every bit of his fruitful retirement.  both his wife Jackie and Ricks wife Robin are wonderful ladies and are very supportive of their addiction to hunting, fishing and being in the great outdoors.
